An overwhelming majority of countries at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen want the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, the head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change said Friday.

"Quite honestly, I think overwhelming majority representatives of countries in this conference want two tracks, and want to see the continuation of Kyoto Protocol," Ivo de Boer said.

The ongoing UN climate conference in Copenhagen is proceeding on two tracks. One is under the Kyoto Protocol while the other focuses on longer-term and broader issues.

Some developed countries have long hoped to converge the two tracks so as to evade their binding responsibilities under the Kyoto Protocol, which was adopted in 1997.

Talking about progress of this week, De Boer said people have done serious work at the conference, and there has been significant progress in such areas as technology and adaptation.
